Rule 11: Basket Interference - Goaltending

ap grizzlies suns basketball 96215539 e1514376997941

RULE NO. 11—BASKET INTERFERENCE—GOALTENDING

Section I — A Player Shall Not:

f. Touch any ball from within the playing area that is on its downward flight with an opportunity to score. This is considered to be a “field goal attempt” or trying for a goal.

On a jump shot from the perimeter and beyond is easier to identify basket interferences. If there is an interference from a defender it would occur closer to the basket and away from the play. The primary official still has to cover the shooter on the play, while a goaltending call is best to come from secondary officials.

The downward flight of a shot attempt is a tough call to judge. Especially when the play is deep in the key.

A officials' conference would be okay if goaltending was called on a play.

Crew chief stuff!!
